An Overview of AUT Chinese Student Association
AUT Chinese Student Association (AUTCSA) was launched in early 2003 with the aim of supporting, informing and connecting all Chinese speaking students through the facilitation of relevant academic activities and social events. This young and active student club is affiliated with Auckland Student Movement (AuSM), a student union based at AUT University and has gained strong support and help from the Chinese Consulate General in Auckland, AUT Chinese Centre and AUT staff. AUTCSA membership is open for all AUT Chinese speaking students and the students of other nationalities. To date there are over 600 registered members.
AUTCSA organises various activities such as academic activities, social and cultural events, and recreational events to cater for the needs of its members.
Academic activities:
Chinese peer tutor programme:
Senior Chinese students from the same major and programme provide help to and share their coping strategies with the members who have academic difficulties.
Learning support:
Every semester AUTCSA organises different workshops jointly with AUT Chinese Centre to assist new Chinese students in adapting to the new academic styles and environment. The major workshops are APA Referencing, Oral Presentation, Essay and Report Writing and Portfolio Writing. We also organise workshops on student support services, survival tips and job hunting strategies to help Chinese students adjust to the life on campus and in Auckland.
Social and cultural activities
As one of the largest ethnic student organisations under AuSM at AUT, AUTCSA encourages its members to fit into New Zealand society by actively facilitating its members to participate in all sorts of social and cultural events and community volunteer work in Auckland, for example, Chinese cultural performances and tree planting.
Recreational activities:
AUTCSA is a student club thus organizing social activities to entertain its members is one of its key goals.
Free BBQ
Every semester, AUTCSA organizes a free BBQ for the members. The members can enjoy delicious BBQ and games, and make new friends.
Sport activities:
From 2006 the Sports Department started to organise sport events. To this day AUTCSA has the teams of basketball, football, badminton, and table tennis and will organise board games such as Chinese chess, I-go, Chinese checkers etc.
Dance Class
The Recreation Department was formed in 2006, aiming to enrich the spare life of its members. It has been operating a Ballroom Dance Class every Tuesday evening since April 2006. A professional and patient Chinese dance instructor teaches ballroom and other modern dances. This class sees an active participation of the members of different nationalities and is highly regarded by the participants.
Ski Trip
Every July AUTCSA organises one to two skip trips to Whakapapa Ski Field and sightseeing to Roturoa and Taupo. The experience will be memorable. AUTCSA is committed to organizing events and activities according to the members’ interests and needs. We look forward to hearing your requests and feedback.
